Potomac River (tidal section) FKP Details
Potomac River (Tidal section) Overall Fastest Known Paddle: TBD
Route proposed by:
David Bortnick
110 miles (approximately)
Supported (with safety boat)
Start: Beach at Fletcher’s Cove, Washington, District of Columbia. This beach is just a few hundred yards downstream from the Fletcher’s Cove dock.
Finish: Point Lookout Boat Ramp, Scotland, Maryland
Notes from Route Creator David Bortnick: The tidal section of the Potomac starts at the base of little falls (class 3-4 rapids) and ends at the Chesapeake Bay. The put in for this FKP -- Fletcher's Cove -- is the closest landmark below little falls and the take out -- Point Lookout Boat Ramp -- is the closest landmark on the Maryland side to the Chesapeake Bay.
Additional notes from James Dunbar: While paddlers won't find any rapids or other technical water, they will need to plan their route to optimize the tides, as the Potomac rises about three feet through the tidal cycle. Given how open the Potomac gets, especially closer to the Bay, there may be significant wind influence, and some sections are known for downwinding if the wind points the right way.
